SAN DIEGO, Calif. – There were a lot of flashes of vintage Bianca Andreescu – 2019 vintage – in a tough three-set defeat to Coco Gauff in San Diego Thursday.
She needed a couple more of those flashes. And in the end, she was feeling it physically (and mentally) with the humidity and the effort.
But for a first-ever matchup between the two, it was high level and makes you look forward to the next one.
Here’s our report for TVA, which includes another super interview with the Canadian (in English!), after the match. (Google translate is your friend!)
You could tell she’s feeling it, too.
On to Guadalajara.
And here’s a photo gallery of the action.
Buena suerte! Maybe we will run into each other on Friday night!
Find me! I’ll be roaming.
I have a ticket for next Friday night’s session in Guadalajara. Hoping like heck that at least one Canadian makes it to the quarterfinals, & is scheduled to play the night match.
I was very happy to see Bianca using more variety against Gauff instead of the power game that she seemed to have veered toward in the last couple of years.
Are you going on to Guad from San Diego? Tks.
She’s hardly played the last couple of years, so tough to really judge the game style. It takes awhile to get back to it when there are so many options.
She slugged it out most of the time v Gauff. But there were some great variety moments.
Yes, I’m coming to Guadalajara on the Tijuana express at 1 a.m. Sunday morning. Wish me luck.
