SAN DIEGO, Calif. – You could already see the red-and-white paraphernalia in the lineup of fans waiting to get into the Barnes Tennis Center Thursday.
They had dressed up to welcome world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland to the area.
And they were outstanding.
Here’s what the atmosphere was like as Swiatek took on lucky loser Zheng Qinwen in her opening round – it was a three-setter, and a pretty good one, before Swiatek sort of took control of things in the late stages.
Zheng a San Diego rock star – who knew?
Meanwhile, after Zheng took care of Rebecca Marino in the qualifying over the weekend, she was absolutely mobbed by a throng of Chinese fans, who were pretty vocal during the match as well.
Against Swiatek, however, they were kind of … outnumbered and out-vocalized.
Here’s what else Swiatek had to say after the win over Zheng.
She takes on Coco Gauff in her quarterfinal Friday night.
And given this is Gauff’s home turf (even if she was born raised on the other side of the country), the red-and-white brigade are going to have to up their game.
