The second day of round-robin play at a tour finals pits the two winners of the first day against each other, and the two losers against each other.

That lends instant urgency to the thing as a player who’s already lost one, if they lose another, is 0-2 and pretty much out of it.

But they probably didn’t expect that Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula, the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, would be in the loser’s bracket and basically fighting for their survival.

The loser of that one – Pegula – will find it pretty tough to stay alive.

Meanwhile, with Pegula and Gauff in different round-robin groups in singles, someone was going to get the short stick as the two are also qualified in the doubles.

To probably no one’s surprise, it was Pegula – who has to play singles and doubles each day she plays, while Gauff just has one or the other every day. The pair are now 0-2.
