MELBOURNE, Australia – It’s been a crazy few days at the WTA tournament in Adelaide – the second in two weeks.
Originally, it was supposed to have an even tougher cutoff than Adelaide 1 – at No. 22 protected, Bianca Andreescu didn’t even make it.
But not unexpectedly, United Cup players Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula pulled out.
And then Ons Jabeur’s back acted up in her semifinal in the first event, and she too will not make the date.
That brings the number of seeds to 12; and there are four lucky losers.
Canadian Rebecca Marino is in Hobart while her other compatriots are either training in Melbourne, or playing the Australian Open qualifying.
(Adelaide is 15 1/2 hours ahead of Eastern time; Hobart is 16 hours.

Was wondering who Dabrowski would be playing with this year. Thought she might go back to Stefani now that she seems to be recovered & playing again.
I’m pretty sure I wrote about that last fall after I asked her about it. There are plenty of reasons not to do it – including the fact that she’d end up unseeded most places because of Stefani’s ranking.
It’s pretty tough to push aside a player you made the year-end finals with, on top of that.
