ADELAIDE, Australia – Leylah Fernandez is into the first final of the 2023 season – in her first tournament.

It’s not singles, but she and American veteran Bethanie Mattek-Sands made the doubles final in Auckland, after a tough week during which they basically played everything indoors.

In Adelaide, there is the singles final – and also the final round of the singles qualifying for Adelaide 2. That one already has the expected number of late withdrawals including two of the top three players in Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula. So in the end, there were FOUR lucky losers after some pretty hard battles on a brutally hot day.

(Adelaide is 15 1/2 hours ahead of Eastern time; Hobart is 16 hours and Auckland is 18 hours ahead).
