MELBOURNE, Australia – Not a lot of Canadian content, as three of the four Canucks on the women’s doubles side are out, and there are none in the men’s doubles.
But the juniors get under way on Saturday – with qualifier Ellie Daniels on the girls side, and Keegan Rice – a 2006, just 16 – making his junior Slam debut.
Actually, they both were. But both went out.
There are no other boys in the draw; also there for the girls is Naomi Xu, the younger sister of Annabelle Xu (who is off to college). The two played doubles together at junior Wimbledon last summer.
The core group of young Canadian women was going to play here (Mboko, Cross, et al) – but in the end apparently Tennis Canada decided to take a pass, and they’re playing lower-level pro events instead.
Melbourne is 16 hours ahead of Eastern time.
