Sloane Stephens had a rough one in Mérida last week. So it couldn’t have been hugely comforting to see the talented Taylor Townsend on the other side of the net from her for her first-round match in Austin.

Stephens looked like she was on a mission, though.

Also on the docket was No. 4 seed Danielle Collins, who dealt with migraines in the Middle East and didn’t have the trip she was looking for. She got through against Frech, but had to come back from a set down to do it.

No. 3 seed Anastasia Potapova had to pull out of Dubai because she was ill, and couldn’t get healthy enough in time to compete. She looked just dandy against Mandlik.

Caroline Garcia, Donna Vekic and Mérida champion Camila Giorgi enter the fray in Monterrey, with the quick turnaround being just a little too much for Giorgi.
