MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

WTA Tour – Friday, May 26, 2023 final results

Not many seeds left, but still tournaments to win in Rabat and Strasbourg.

Which begs the question: who is Julia Riera of Argentina?*

(*As usual, the WTA website has … nothing. Well, they do have a photo).

Per the ITF website, she’s 20, ranked close to her career high at No. 195, and has beaten Kristina Mladenovic, Mayer Sherif and Yulia Putintseva so far this week in Rabat.

A few weeks ago, she was playing a $25K in Ecuador. Two, actually, and won them both. Last week was the first time she’d been out of South America all year. Until last week she’d won just two matches above the $25K level – one at a $40K, and the other at a WTA 125.

She stopped playing the juniors when she was 16, barely broke the top 300 in the ITF rankings, and only left South American once – to play junior Fed Cup.

This was her WTA Tour main-level debut, and she was straight into the draw. She was outside the top 250 at the RG qualifying deadline, and so didn’t even make the cut there. This is working out a whole lot better for her – even if the road ends here, she’ll be in the top 150.

It is the randomest of random outcomes, even in the “week before a Slam” situation.

Rabat is five hours ahead of EDT; Strasbourg is six hours ahead.
