The day ended up quite a bit more dramatic than expected, as a Venus Williams (and her bad knee) battled for more than three hours to defeat Camila Giorgi.

There was a lot going on in that one. And Williams was pretty ebullient when it was over.

None of the seeded players who saw action in singles were upset victims.
