The fact that unseeded Marketa Vondrousova, who heretofore had pretty much very little gravitas in terms of her grass results, could make it all the way to the Wimbledon ladies’ singles final tells you that it’s now open to basically anyone – especially those who have shown some hands on clay.

But if Ons Jabeur were to let this one get away, it would be an extremely bitter pill to swallow. She did, and it must have been.

Both have cut a swath through former Grand Slam champions on their way there. So they both deserved it in spades. Perhaps the difference was that Vondrousova (at least as long as the trophy wasn’t actually in sight) felt very little pressure, and Jabeur felt it all.
