–
After an opening round win on Sunday, Genie Bouchard got the same time slot on the stadium court in the second round, where she faced No. 7 seed Veronika Kudermetova. There was drama, there was some good tennis, there was a reoccurrence of Bouchard’s knee woes. And in the end, a tight loss.
As well, another Canadian made her WTA-level debut – and at the 1000 level, no less – as Vancouver’s Stacey Fung played Marta Kostyuk and took a set.
And Carol Zhao, who qualified, lost in straight sets to San Diego finalist Sofia Kenin.
So to sum up: three Canadians playing at a WTA 1000. But probably not the three you might expect.
In Guangzhou, China, the group of players who headed to Asia early to play Osaka last week have mostly moved over for this WTA 250 event.
(Guangzhou is 12 hours ahead of ET; Guadalajara is two hours behind).

Hi Steph did you do a write up somewhere else about the knee issue and drama that Bouchard faced in her match vs Kudermetova . If not can you let us know what went down ? I noticed she was without a coach in the stands but had her beau there instead.
She hasn’t had a real coach since … Michael Joyce. That was years ago.
But no. I’ve been on TV all week and haven’t written much.
I mean, she felt the knee landing after a serve. It was the same knee that was hurt earlier in the year. She tweaked it a bit, I guess. Hasn’t played much. Not that much drama (relatively speaking!)
