CANCÚN, Mexico – They’re starting earlier in Cancún Wednesday, with the late doubles match on Tuesday having been rained out.
So Canadians Gaby Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe got an earlier start as they faced the team they defeated in the US Open final. And also the team that knocked Dabrowski’s BJK Cup teammate Leylah Fernandez out of the doubles here. And they beat them – qualifying for the semifinals
On the singles side – the only player who wasn’t a complete mope out there was Iga Swiatek.
(Cancún is an hour behind EDT; Midland is on EDT)

Personally, I prefer the shorter 10 pt super tiebreaker 3 rd set as I want quality of tennis over quantity. I would much rather watch a short high quality set than a long slogging low quality one. Like the 5 set 2020 US Open men’s final Thiem vs Zverev. It was way too long and by the end they both played like amateurs just trying to get the ball over the net. It was kind of embarrassing and I think the viewing audience and both players suffered.
I can’t believe the WTA doubles finals are not 2 out of 3 normal sets. What are Steve Simon and the WTA thinking?
Ultimately, the WTA has to ask itself if the product they are offering is worth watching for a full normal match or even 3 out of 5 sets at the Slams. I say it is.
Everybody that cares about women’s pro tennis, including the WTA, should be lobbying for 3 out of 5 sets at the slams. At least from the 1/16 onwards as an initial test for one year. There is just too much of the kind of thinking that, yeah, the girls have to finish their 2/3 set match quickly because Nadal or someone is on afterwards and that 3/5 is going to be the “real” entertainment.
I don’t think that’s the … thinking … since they do it for doubles AT THE ATP FINALS, too.
Oh, you didn’t know that? That tracks.
That truly is … not the thinking. I mean, maybe some idiots think this.
You should probably check your facts before you offer your opinion about … well, most things, really.
