Daniil Medvedev honoured friend Andrey Rublev by asking him to be the godfather of his first child. But he hasn’t had any pity for him on the match court.
The 27-year-old led their head-to-head 6-2 as they open play in Turin, having won the last two. That said, Rublev beat Medvedev in a third-set tiebreak when they met at the ATP Finals a year ago. But it’s now 7-2.
On the other side, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev – whose off-court future will involve time spent in court appealing an order from the German courts to pay huge compensation to his former girlfriend Brenda Patea (the mother of his daughter) for alleged abuse – were 3-3 against each other. But Zverev pulled off the win.
(Turin is six hours ahead of EST).
