SYDNEY, Australia – Two of the Australian Open tuneups are at the semifinal stage. And the other two – in Adelaide and Hobart – start their qualifying Saturday.
There’s a bit more of a rush than usual, with the Australian Open moving to a Sunday start this year from its longstanding Monday start.
No. 1 seed in Adelaide is Marta Kostyuk, who is a top-40 player. It’s nothing like the cutoffs we saw a year ago with the 500 events. But it’s still very strong.
Leylah Fernandez was due to play Adelaide. But in the end she decided to pass and will spend the week practicing instead.
(Brisbane is 15 hours ahead of EST, Sydney 16 hours and Auckland 18 hours).
