The hoped-for blockbuster between Rybakina and Naomi Osaka never occurred, of course, because Danielle Collins played spoiler in the first round against the returning Japanese player. Collins almost did it again, but just fell short.

In Cluj, Anastasija Sevastova continued her run in her first WTA-level match since a long break that included maternity leave with a win, via retirement, over Avanesyan.
