Main draw action began in both San Diego and Austin, WTA 500 and 250 levels, respectively.

Different climates, different conditions. But while the San Diego lineup is somewhat stripped for a 500 (even if the level is generally higher), it is Austin that will be a serious opportunity for just about anyone in the draw to make a big move the week before Indian Wells.

Young Canadian Marina Stakusic makes her WTA 500 debut, in only her second career WTA-level main draw. It was a good draw, too; her opponent, a 35-year-old with limited experience at the WTA level and ranked outside the top 400, was also a qualifier.

And Stakusic was the steadier of the two, getting through going away in the third set.
