INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – While it still takes some getting used to seeing “No. 13” next to Jasmine Paolini’s name and “No. 21” next to Anna Kalinskaya’s name, all bets are off as the seeds see their first action of this year’s edition.

Swiatek, Rybakina and Jabeur are the biggies, with question marks here and there as to form. Especially Rybakina, who was sort of a ghostly presence here the last few days and, in the end, pulled out with gastro-intestinal issues.

A few matches were held over from Thursday, and so Friday is a mix of first- and second-round clashes.

The only Canadian, Leylah Fernandez, won’t see her first action until Saturday.
