She plays qualifier Clara Tauson, who was a top junior, a quick riser on the WTA Tour – only to be waylaid by injuries, mostly her back.

Indian Wells finalist Maria Sakkari is also out Thursday to try to do at least as well in Miami, if not even better.

Notably, Aryna Sabalenka’s opening match against good pal Paula Badosa is the one match in the bottom half of the draw that isn’t on the schedule Thursday.
