He was first up on the Rainier court, at 5 a.m. EDT (2 p.m. PDT) against a tough customer in rising Italian Luca Nardi.

It turned out to be a rather routine win, with FAA’s serve and forehand firing.

Also in action on doubles court were Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz (who won), along with Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego (who lost)

Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas also were in action and advanced.
