A second 1000-level event in a row features the usual suspects: Leylah Fernandez on the women’s side, and Félix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and Cana-Chilean Alejandro Tabilo on the men’s side.
Monday’s rankings were used for the men’s draw, which means Auger-Aliassime is seeded (he wasn’t in Madrid). And given the WTA used the rankings from two weeks ago, that meant that Fernandez wasn’t seeded.
With Gabriela Dabrowski injured, partner Erin Routliffe managed to scratch up a decent sub: Coco Gauff!
Marina Stakusic was in Prague, and Katherine Sebov and … Genie Bouchard (!!!!!) were in Zephyr Hills, Fla.
Bouchard hadn’t played singles in a tournament since last September. And hadn’t played tennis at all since she got a doubles assignment at the BJK Cup finals last November.
On the winning side, Israeli-Canadian Roy Stepanov won his first Challenger title down in Brazil.

Too bad Genie had to retire in her match. She did well to reach the quarter-finals in her first tournament of the year. Hope it’s not the abs, again.
Statusic, also, did well in reaching the quarter-finals. She seems to be finding her feet on the clay.
The abs was, like, a century ago, right?
I mean, she basically didn’t train to go out and play a tennis tournament. She went and partied at Stageboach.
Not shocking she’d hit a wall.
As for Stakusic, her best situation will always be an indoor hard court. It’s just the start of her journey, though.
I’m glad to hear Erin found a great partner, but sorry to hear Gabi is injured. I hope she’s back soon.
