Also taking the court – No. 1 seed Andrey Rublev. Why he’s playing, when he’s not going to be at the Olympics and probably needs a head-space break at this point, is a question only he can answer. And he, too, was one and done.

As well, Alexander Zverev played his first match in Hamburg, as did Stefanos Tsitsipas in Gstaad. Both got through.

In Newport, the field might not be deep. But the American content is off the charts – all eight second-round matches on Wednesday had at least one American. And two of them guaranteed quarterfinalists.

And there were players with plenty at stake; defending champion Adrian Mannarino (who lost to Reily Opelka) and the struggling Christopher Eubanks, who squeezed out a tough one against Aidan Quinn.
