Given the top-level Americans in the Toronto draw this week, it is a most unexpected one – Amanda Anisimova – who was one of the last two players standing.

There’s no doubting her pedigree as a tennis player. But the last few years have been rough ones for the former Roland Garros semifinalist, who doesn’t even turn 23 for a few weeks.

She’s three months younger than the countrywoman she defeated Saturday, No. 8 seed Emma Navarro – who literally is just getting started in her career while Anisimova has been through it.

On the doubles side, the Canadian women save the bacon as there was Canuckian presence in the final. But Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski fell just short – again, to two more Americans.
