After her impressive, if messy, upset of No. 4 Elena Rybakina, Canadian Leylah Fernandez got a fellow unseeded player.

It was fellow young lefty Diana Shnaider, who has been having as good a season as all but a few players on tour with three titles on three different surfaces. But it was Fernandez – routinely.

There is some doubling up, with Zheng Qinwen needing to finish her match and play again. And Toronto champion Jessica Pegula having to START her first match, win and play again.

Pegula, the ultimate pro, came through twice.
