MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

WTA Rankings Report – As of Aug. 26, 2024

(WTAtv)

With the Saturday finals preceding the US Open, and just two of the remaining tournaments high-level enough for the rankings to go on immediately, Monday’s updated WTA Tour rankings are already out!

Early! On Sunday afternoon!

No changes in the top 10, as none of them played last week.

There are career highs for Emma Navarro, Monterrey champion Linda Noskova, Monterrey runnerup Lulu Sun, Cleveland champion McCartney Kessler and more.

Emma Navarro (USA): No. 13 ==========> No. 12 (The 23-year-old American moves up to another career high, after she made the semifinals in Monterrey. The hill gets steeper from here, and she has a potentially dangerous first-round opponent in New York. (1st-round US Open opponent: Anna Blinkova)

Linda Noskova (CZE): No. 35 ==========> No. 25 (Noskova’s first career WTA title is a 500, albeit one downgraded some in quality of field. But she was impressive nonetheless in riding to a new career high after Monterrey). (1st-round US Open opponent: [30] Yulia Putintseva)

Anastasia Potapova (RUS): No. 43 ==========> No. 38 (The Russian, who was as high as No. 21 a little over a year ago, gets some momentum back as she makes the Cleveland semifinals. She comes into the US Open with a little better wave of confidence than her first-round opponent in New York). (1st-round US Open opponent: [23] Leylah Fernandez )

Lulu Sun (NZL): No. 57==========> No. 41 (Another career high for the 23-year-old Kiwi, who had a great run to the Monterrey final 500 but was edged out in two tight sets by Noskova. She’s tired with Wang Xinyu at No. 40 with 1,373 points, so technically you could posit she’s making her top-40 debut). (1st-round US Open opponent: Lucia Bronzetti)

(WTAtv)

McCartney Kessler (USA): No. 98 ==========> No. 63 (Kessler, at 25, finally jumped into the top 100 last week, which earned her a wild card straight into the US Open main draw. She won’t have to worry about those for awhile, as her first – and most unexpected – WTA title came in Cleveland on Saturday, with a big-time bump in the rankings. It wasn’t just her first title; it marked her first career WTA Tour main-draw MATCH win). (1st-round US Open opponent: [19] Marta Kostyuk)

Erika Andreeva (RUS): No. 89 ==========> No. 75 (She’s still a ways away from catching 17-year-old baby sister Mirra. But the 20-year-old reaches another career with a quarterfinal in Monterrey). (1st-round US Open opponent: Yuan Yue)

Leylah Fernandez (CAN): No. 24==========> No. 26 (Fernandez slipped down a couple of spots after her first-round exit in Cleveland, as the No. 2 seed. It’s a shame, too; she’s in a tight section of the draw and had she won it, she could have been a whisper away from getting back into the top 20). (1st-round US Open opponent: Anastasia Potapova)

Tatjana Maria (GER): No. 87 ==========> No. 99 (The 37-year-old mother of two drops her points from the Cleveland semifinal a year ago, and barely stays inside the top 100 after losing in the first round of Monterrey). (1st-round US Open opponent: [Q] Solana Sierra)

(USTA/Jennifer Pottheiser)

Sara Sorribes Tormo (ESP): No. 73 ==========> No. 115 (OUCHie for Sorrie Tormo, who drops out of the top 100 after losing in the second round in Cleveland. A year ago, she went from the qualifying to the tite as she beat No. 3 seed Veronika Kudermetova, No. 9 Sloane Stephens and No. 4 Ekaterina Alexandrova en route. She will hope to make a move at the US Open). (1st-round US Open opponent: [WC] Alexa Noel)

Destanee Aiava (AUS): No. 180 ==========> No. 194 (This 24-year-old from Australia’s tennis life has been … some journey. So no wonder she was emotional after qualifying for the US Open. The irony is that she drops points by doing it – at least for now – because she was defending a title at a $25K in the UK from a year ago. She has more than 175 points to defend the rest of this season, all from ITF events back home in the fall). (1st-round US Open opponent: [4] Elena Rybakina)
