Back-to-back WTA 1000s at this stage of the season is challenging, to say the least. Which is why many players have opted out of playing, including world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

They have to take a zero-pointer, and obviously pass up potential prize money at this tournament, which offers more than $8 million of it.

Collins, Sakkari, Jabeur, Azarenka and Garcia joined Swiatek on the sidelines, as has Canadian Bianca Andreescu, out of the qualifying with a reported knee injury.

Marina Stakusic and Carol Zhao were in the qualifying, which begins on Monday with the main draw kicking off on Wednesday in the 96-player draw. Neither got through their opener.
