The four singles finalists on the WTA Tour this week are: a wild card, a qualifier, an unseeded Serb and … Zheng Qinwen.
That’s about par for the course in late October, which is opportunity time for a lot of players with top guns already qualified for the year-end finals, and other higher-ranked players broken or battered.
So an intriguing story unfolded Sunday in Tokyo: can wild card Sofia Kenin, a former world No. 4 and Grand Slam winner nearly five years ago, complete this great run and win her first title since Lyon in 2020?
Kenin, 25, came into the tournament ranked No. 155. She couldn’t quite do it. But she cut her ranking nearly in half.
(Hong Kong and Jiangxi are 12 hours ahead)
