The second day of pool play has winners playing winners to try to clinch – or close.

And the first-day losers play each other to fight to stay in the group.

We’ll see if Elena Rybakina, who didn’t play … terribly against the great Jasmine Paolini defence in her opener but really needs to clean it up, could do better against Zheng Qinwen. She did, but ran out of gas.

And we’ll see if Paolini’s defence has the same effect on No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka as it did vs. Rybakina. (Answer: not enough).

On the doubles side, the two higher seeded teams both lost their openers. So they find themselves in a position of battling for survival pretty quickly.
