MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

WTA Rankings Report – as of Feb. 17, 2025

Amanda Anisimova is the big winner after last week’s WTA tournaments.

The former No. 21, unseeded, ran through the top-class field at the WTA 1000 in Doha and, in taking the title, leaps into the top 20 for the first time in her career.

Having dealt with the tragic death of her father and longtime coach at a very young age, and after taking a mental break to get things aligned again, it’s an impressive comeback.

Iga Swiatek remains at No. 2 in the rankings. But dropping more than 600 points moves her from nipping at Aryna Sabalenka’s heels, to being a fair bit behind.

Notably, with Anisimova’s rise, there are now six American women in the top 20: Gauff, Pegula, Keys, Navarro, Collins and Anisimova.

(First-round opponents in Dubai in brackets)

Amanda Anisimova (USA): No. 39 ===========> No. 18 (Winning a WTA 1000 will do wonders for your ranking as Anisimova nearly doubles the 1,316 points she had coming into the week. A year ago, she was outside the top 200 after being at No. 442 just before the 2024 Australian Open)(McCartney Kessler)

Ekaterina Alexandrova (RUS): No. 26 ===========> No. 22 (Another good week for Alexandrova, who backs up her Linz title with a semifinal effort and is back close to the top 20)(Veronika Kudermetova).

Jelena Ostapenko (LAT): No. 37 ===========> No. 26 (Ostapenko looked unbeatable in thrashing Iga Swiatek and indeed all week in Doha – until she ran into Anisimova. Still, a nice move)([Q] Moyuka Uchijima).

Sofia Kenin (USA): No. 73 ===========> No. 56 (Kenin got wild cards into both Doha last week and Dubai this week. She made the third round in Doha)(def [16] DonnaVekic 1R).

Caroline Garcia (FRA): No. 76 ===========> No. 70 (Garcia, also a recipient of wild cards in both events, also made the third round in Doha)(lost to Marketa Vondrousova 1R).

Parks and Garcia after the Lyon final two years ago, won by Parks. Both had rankings rises this week and both are in the Dubai main draw, fighting to get back to their best level.

Alycia Parks (USA): No. 90 ===========> No. 74 (The maddenly inconsistent Parks qualified and reached the third round in Doha. She qualified this week in Dubai as well)(def Wang Xinyu 1R).

Emiliana Arango (COL): No. 169 ===========> No. 133 (The biggest win of the 24-year-old Colombian’s career, only her second final at the WTA level).

Carson Branstine (CAN): No. 272 ===========> No. 207 (The qualifying was a slam-dunk in Cancun, so after one match win Branstine, 24, got to work on the main draw. She had won just one match above the ITF level in her career, but won four in a row in Cancún and was poised for the biggest title of her career. Unfortunately, she looked pretty ill on the court and although she finished the match, she’ll be devastated she couldn’t compete. Still. A nice leap to a career high).

Mirra Andreeva (RUS) (No. 14)
Amanda Anisimova (USA) (No. 18)
Rebecca Sramkova (SVK) (No. 42)
Sonay Kartal (GBR) (No. 80)
Eva Lys (GER) (No. 87)
Francesca Jones (GBR) (No. 136)
Carson Branstine (CAN) (No. 207)
Clervie Ngounoue (USA) (No. 253)

Leylah Fernandez (CAN): No. 27 ===========> No. 30 (Fernandez bowed out in the third round after making the quarterfinals a year ago in Doha, beating Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa before losing to Elena Rybakina. She has second-round points to defend in Dubai)(lost to Elise Mertens 1R).

Victoria Azarenka (BLR): No. 30 ===========> No. 34 (Azarenka lost in the first round in Doha, after making the quarterfinals last year. So far, her 2025 season, at age 35, seems a bit adrift)(Anhelina Kalinina).

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS): No. 25 ===========> No. 36 (Pavlyuchenkova didn’t play Doha this year, after making the semis a year ago. She’s “at home” in Dubai this week)(lost to Liudmila Samsonova 1R).

Marketa Vondrousova (CZE): No. 34 ===========> No. 39 (Vondrousova made the third round in Doha a year ago, but was upset in the first round this year by Elina Svitolina)(def [WC] Caroline Garcia 1R).

Naomi Osaka (JPN): No. 44 ===========> No. 54 (Osaka has been MIA since Australia with an abdominal issue. She didn’t play Doha, where she made the quarterfinals last year, and isn’t in the Dubai draw either)(Not playing).

Sorana Cirstea (ROU): No. 79 ===========> No. 89 ([10] Daria Kasatkina)

Erika Andreeva (RUS): No. 81 ===========> No. 94 (A year ago, Andreeva qualified and won a round in Doha. This year, she lost in the final round of qualifying).

Karolina Pliskova (CZE): No. 69 ===========> No. 132 (Out after surgery, Pliskova made the semifinals in Doha last year, and wasn’t able to defend those points. She hasn’t played since the US Open, and she drops out of the top 100 for the first time since Feb. 2013).

Lesia Tsurenko (UKR): No. 67 ===========> No. 186 (Tsurenko, 35, has always periodically sort of dropped out of sight and watched her ranking drop. But this is a big drop, after she didn’t defend her third-round points from Doha last year. She hasn’t yet played in 2025; from her Instagram it looks like she’s travelling and learning to both ice skate and ski. So it feels like a mental break).
