The Dubai lineup on the second court – with Shnaider, Kostyuk, the in-form Alexandrova and Doha champion and finalist Anisimova and Ostapenko – was arguably more fascinating than the lineup on the centre court.

That’s sometimes how it goes though, on the last day before the top eight seeds jump into action in this “old-school” 1000, which is by structure somewhat backloaded.

But this sked wasn’t as strong as the one on Day 1 Sunday.

The question was whether Anisimova and Ostapenko, with just the Sunday to rest and recover after big weeks in Doha, would come out firing. They did not; neither did two other in-form players – Alexandrova and Jabeur.
