For the second straight WTA 1000, a pair of unlikely finalists were there on the final day.

It’s a trend – not a good trend, but worth examining in another space.

This week, it was No. 12 seed Mirra Andreeva – the youngest WTA 1000 finalist since the advent of the format – playing Clara Tauson, unseeded.

Andreeva beat both Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina en route.

Tauson, a former Australian Open junior champion whose rise has been speed-bumped by injuries, has also been impressive. But she ran out of gas in the final, and Andreeva – after a close first set – took it.

Concurrently, qualifying begins in Mérida and Austin – where Canadians Rebecca Marino and Marina Stakusic were be in action. Except it was still too cold to play in Austin.
