Unlike last week, when the balance of star power tipped to Doha over Rio in a rout, the two 500s on the ATP this week are more evenly balanced.

All of the top Americans are in Acapulco, with Ben Shelton (No. 5) and Tommy Paul (No. 3 seed) already up on the Monday schedule along with No. 2 seed Casper Ruud.

In Acapulco, the low-key intriguing one is between No. 8 seed Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik. Both are “young” up-and-comers, but there is a five-year age gap and Machac, a brilliant ball striker, is obviously further up the ladder. But it’s a first meeting for the present and future of Czech men’s tennis.

And Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who qualified on Sunday, got a late-night match against Paul but couldn’t make the magic happen.
