Seeds were in action for the men as well – with No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev (if that seems weird in the recent context, it’s because of the doping suspension being served by Jannik Sinner and isn’t going to change until at least Rome) at the top of the draw. But he was one and done, another opportunity to catch up to Sinner that he couldn’t take.

Also in action: No. 4 Ruud, No. 5 Medvedev and No. 8 Tsitsipas. Ruud is also out.

Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who had to come back on Thursday to finish off an impressive win over talented Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen, was right back at it with a winnable match against No. 20 seed Arthur Fils.

Except it was amazing Fils who showed up, and Diallo didn’t have a shot.
