It could have been Coco Gauff v Naomi Osaka, a battle of American Grand Slam champions (okay, Osaka represents Japan, but we know the drill).
Instead, they didn’t make the date, and either No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini (who beat Osaka) or the solid Polish player Magda Linette (who took care of Gauff) will be a Miami Open semifinalist. The favorite prevailed.
As for the other quarterfinal on tap, it’s a night session between No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 9 seed Zheng Qinwen. It was a hard-hitting, sometimes eye-popping contest that put Sabalenka up 6-0 in their rivalry, which could indeed be an epic one if Zheng just improves, maybe, 10 per cent.
She has it in her.
(Miami is on ET).
