But we did have Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who returned last week in Rouen and is using a protected ranking to get into Madrid. She faced American McCartney Kessler, who has risen up to the upper levels mostly while Andreescu has been off the grid. And she looked great.

And there’s a meeting between sisters Veronika Kudermetova and Polina Kudermetova. Polina, the younger, was a good junior but took a little while to rise up – she’s six years younger than Veronika, who turns 28 on Thursday.

They are meeting for the first time in the pros – and in a big event. Let’s hope it goes better than the second career meeting between Mirra Andreeva and big sister Erika last week in Stuttgart.

Petra Kvitova, Belinda Bencic and Emma Raducanu were also on tap, with the latter two getting through.
