The penultimate round in Rome features Coco Gauff – who most might have expected. But no Swiatek, No Sabalenka. Instead, home favorite Jasmine Paolini, ironwoman Peyton Stearns and Sabalenka-feller Zheng Qinwen make up the final four.

Gauff v Zheng was late-night, error-strewn but compelling drama. Won by the American.

Concurrently, two Canadians have made the quarterfinals at the Parma WTA 125 event.

Marina Stakusic and Victoria Mboko went for the final four on Thursday, with Mboko having the tougher ask against No. 2 seed Wang Xinyu. But she was the one to get through.
