Americans Ben Shelton and Alex Michelsen – the No. 1 and No. 3 seed – took the court in Mallorca Wednesday. And Shelton is out.
And both faced Americans – in Shelton’s case, unseeded Learner Tien and in Michelsen’s case, qualifier Brandon Holt.
All but Shelton are southern California dudes.
In Eastbourne, two more top Americans in No. 1 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 2 Tommy Paul get going. In Fritz’s case, he took on teenaged up-and-comer Joao Fonseca.
For the rusty Paul, who wasn’t healthy enough to try to defend his title at Queen’s Club, it was one and done.
(Mallorca is six hours ahead of EDT; Eastbourne is five hours ahead).
