Friday she got qualifier Taylor Townsend – an old doubles partner and a different kind of challenge, as Townsend already has four singles matches under her belt – four more than Pegula had on the hard courts – and is a lefty on top of that. It was gruelling, on a brutal day. But she got through.

Also – Emma Raducanu looked to back up an impressive win over Naomi Osaka with another against ANOTHER player who is finding form, Maria Sakkari. And she did.

And in Prague, the singles final will be an all-Czech affair. Can’t ask for more.

And with the quick win on a retirement in doubles, Townsend becomes the No. 1 doubles player in the world.
