MONTREAL – Iga Swiatek has looked very good so far in Montreal, as she kicks off the summer hard-court season at the Omnium Banque Nationale.
Then again, it’s been a good draw so far: qualifier Guo Hanyu, and then Eva Lys (who elimiated Yulia Putintseva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, respectively, thus on a few levels making it easier for the No. 2 seed).
On Sunday night, No. 18 seed Clara Tauson will be the first stern test.
The road ahead, as the tournament goes to “night-session only” as of Monday, could include Madison Keys in the quarters, Amanda Anisimova or Naomi Osaka in the semis – and who knows who in the final.
But first things first.
Swiatek 2-0 v Tauson
Swiatek just faced Tauson at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, in the fourth round. She defeated her 6-4, 6-1 on the way to the title.
The four games Swiatek gave up in the first set were fourth-most of the 15 sets she playede during the Championships.
Here’s what it looked like.
