And in the end – barely, over No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev in a third-set tiebreak, he made it to the final.
He was looking for his second career ATP 1000 title, his first since winning the Paris Indoors in 2018 (with a smaller draw). But in the end, in another third-set tiebreak, it was Ben Shelton who won his first.
In Cincinnati, the same long slog begins.
