Of the 16 possibilities for first-round opponents that Canadian Rebecca Marino COULD have drawn, she ended up with her countrywoman and Billie Jean King Cup teammate Leylah Fernandez.

They played once before, in the quarterfinals of a WTA 125 in Tampico, Mexico three years ago – won routinely by Marino. But it wasn’t close this time.
