In addition to having two of them play each other, they also decreed that Victoria Mboko, in her US Open debut and as a seeded player, had to face ANOTHER former Grand Slam champion.

As if beating Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka to win Montreal wasn’t enough, she got Barbora Krejcikova in her US Open debut. And it was not to be, on a day that two stalwards of the women’s tour over the last decade said goodbye.
