Coco Gauff, who had a routine opener, faces the astonishing wild card Zhang Shuai. Zhang, 36, went through that disheartening and endless losing streak that lasted a couple of years. But now is playing outstanding tennis. There were openings, but in the end the toll of some tough wins in short order probably left Zhang lacking that little extra to take advantage.
