In the end, the lightning round that is Wuhan came down to an All-American clash in the final.
And it wasn’t a great matchup for Coco Gauff, traditionally, as Pegula held a 4-2 head-to-head.
It was actually the first time they’ve played this year, and Pegula had won thee of the last four, but not the most recent one. That came at the WTA Finals in Riyadh last year, which Gauff ended up winning.
In the end, all the three-setters Pegula had to play – notably against Sabalenka in the semifinal – meant she just didn’t have quite enough gas, even if Gauff gave her some openings.
(Wuhan is 12 hours ahead of EDT)
