(Yumna Al-Arashi / WTA)
The “Serena Williams Group” is the first to go in singles as the year-end WTA Finals get under way in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
It’s probably the deeper group, although Madison Keys is a bit of q question mark as she hasn’t played in quite awhile, choosing a training block this fall instead.
In doubles, it’s the Martina Navratilova Group, perhaps the (relatively) weaker of the two groups.
The fact that defending champions, the Cana-Kiwis Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe, saw their points from that title drop off before this tournament means they dropped down to the No. 3 seed.
And that means they turned out to be in a group with Siniakova and Townsend, and Andreeva and Shnaider.
(Riyadh is 7 hours ahead through Saturday, 8 hours ahead after that)
