MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Vondrousova out of Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia – Marketa Vondrousova was out practicing on Court 13 Sunday morning, the court she was scheduled to play American Hailey Baptiste on later in the day, in the first round of the Australian Open.

Except … Vondrousova is out. About an hour later, she posted the confirmation on Instagram.

Vondrousova is still entered in the doubles, with young compatriot Tereza Valentova.

Taylor Townsend gets in as the lucky loser, and will play Baptiste.

Vondrousova played just one match during the Aussie summer – a brutal 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (0) loss to Magdalena Frech in Brisbane.

The 26-year-old has missed some big chunks of time in recent years: from Wimbledon 2024 to the end of the year, and from Dubai last February through to Roland Garros.

Here she was practicing this morning, which is where she might well have made the final decision to pull out.
