And the night match between Gauff and Alexandra Eala – with her legion of admirers in full vocal force, should have been a serious mental exercise for Gauff, who barely got through against Elise Mertens.

In the end, it was “suck it up” time for Eala, who had nothing to threaten Gauff. At all.
