No seeds, but some marquee players on the sked Wednesday including rising teen phenom Joao Fonseca.
In his first main draw match in the desert – only his second tournament at the Masters 1000 level – he got the stadium court. And got through.
Also on the big court, but with far more question marks, was Nick Kyrgios.
After a long absence, Kyrgios returned in Brisbane in January. But in the end, he couldn’t play the Australian Open and hasn’t played since.
There was video circulating of him having issues with his surgically-repaired wrist on the practice court. And we’ve all seen how tough wrist surgeries are to come back from. He couldn’t finish.
In other news, Canadian Gabriel Diallo was a last-minute lucky loser Wednesday night and got in against Zhang Zhizhen. And fought back to take the second set. But they were stopped at 4-4 in the third by some rain and have to come back today. And he saved match points to pull it out in the third-set tiebreak.
