Two of three Canadian men were in action on Monday, and both had winnable matches as Félix Auger-Aliassime took on James Duckworth, and Gabriel Diallo took on hard-hitting Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Both came through – although it took Auger-Aliassime awhile.

As for the rest, Carlos Alcaraz made the ceremonial men’s champion’s entrance onto Centre Court at 1:30 – and didn’t leave it for another five hours.

And teenage rising star Joao Fonseca got No. 1 Court – but, we suspect, not out of any notion of over-promoting him court-wide before he’s “earned it” (that’s a Wimbledon thing), but because he’s playing the No. 2 Brit after Jack Draper.

Four matches were suspended – two of them on the two roofed courts, because of the 11 p.m. curfew.
