The spotlight match will be Iga Swiatek vs. Amanda Anisimova – a rematch of the blowout win by Swiatek at Wimbledon, and the rather routine revenge win by Anisimova in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
They had never met on Tour before this year – and this is the third clash with major stakes for them.
(Both 2001 vintages, they did meet once in the junior – in the 2016 junior Fed Cup finals in Budapest, where Anisimova won 6-4, 6-2).
This time, as much angst as Anisimova displayed in a tight first set, she rallied and, in a shock result, eliminated Swiatek from contention.
In doubles, the No. 1 seed Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani will try to qualify, after Paolini – suffering from a virus that also affected Madison Keys – had almost nothing against Coco Gauff on Tuesday). They didn’t have much. Tough end to 2025.
