The “Steffi Graf Group” (Sorry, she’ll never be Stefanie here) starts, with a matchup between Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula that could turn out great, but didn’t scream CLASSIC from the get-go.
It’s their eighth meeting, with Pegula winning four. But Gauff had won the last two – including a year ago in Riyadh.
This time, Gauff undid herself – as she often has this year – with 35 forehand unforced errors and 17 double faults. And still, it went three.
On the doubles dide the Cana-Kiwis, who are in a VERY tough pool and are the defending champions, started out against the youngsters – Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider. And they came back in the second set to win in straights.
(Riyadh is 8 hours ahead of EST)
